Maryland Dove visiting SIYC

Fleet Captain - the Maryland Dove
The Maryland Dove has been completed at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels and will be visiting the Solomons Island Yacht Club on September 7 and 12. The sailing vessel, a representation of the late 17th century trading ship that accompanied the first European settlers to what is now Maryland, is owned by the state and operated and maintained by the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission. An earlier version of the ship , built in the 1970’s, was nearing the end of its useful life and decades of research meant that a new ship could be designed to be a more historically accurate representation of the original Maryland Dove. Its new home will be at Historic St. Mary’s City. Captain Will Gates and his crew of seven are willing to provide briefings and guides to SIYC members when the ship is on the SIYC T-head.
~Dennis Chandler, SIYC Fleet Captain
